GENERAL : THANK YOU FOR VISITING. THIS IS THE BETA VERSION. MORE FUNCTIONALITY EXPECTED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. |
Types of Grids/ What is the min-word length for any grid? |
There are many types of grids you can build here starting from the smallest - 4 X 4, to the grand 21 X 21. Check below for minimum word lengths for each. You may set your own min lengths for the smaller grids. This version allows that flexibility. |
NOTE: The Grid Works best if the word min-length count is strictly followed around blank cells. |
The Grids' Min-Word Length rule | |
---|---|
GRID SIZE | MIN-WORD LENGTH |
16 | 2 |
25 | 3 |
49 | 3 |
225 | 3 |
441 | 3 |
Browser Preference: NOTE: This site works best on Chrome. While some pages may seem mobile friendly, when developing the puzzle, please use a desktop. |
Setting The Blank Squares: Place the cursor in the desired cell and type "X". The cell will turn blue. Repeat for as many cells as you wish. (Don't worry about the case, upper or lower.) To erase a blank cell marking, navigate back to that cell and type "?". You will have to delete the "X" first. (There's a related video - Types of Grids) Clickling "RESET" before you fill the grid/cell with clues, will erase all Xs & the blank cell count. Clickling "RESET" any time after that will erase the Xs as well as all input cells. Clicking "BUILD" will set the labels for all unmarked cells and mark the blank cells. This operation cannot be undone without a page reload. Page reload may not work in all scenarios, so plan ahead. Note the counter just below the grid's bottom edge. It is a running tally of the blank cells. Once you're satisfied with your grid's look and numbering, click "BUILD". If everything looks good, you can go ahead and click "LIST" to generate a list of Clues for all the Across and Down cells. Type your clues in the space provide below/next to the the numbers on the respective lists. Make sure you have a copy of the empty grid before you begin filling it in. That way you"ll have both versions at one go. |

Do I have to follow a fixed format? | |
This version allows a certain flexibility with the design. The usual patterns/grid layouts, seen in the leading national dailies, can be built here. The prevalent layouts have been fit into the the coding structure. You will be able to adjust and play around with that, especially since there is no enforced symmetry. You may chart/inculcate the symmetry into your grid design manually. NOTE: It may not be feasible to use this website to build Cryptic Crosswords. | |
